Matheny Flute Studio

Join the Matheny Flute Studio! Carrie Matheny proudly offers flute lessons to children and adults in central Kentucky.

Why Private Lessons?

Private lessons provide a positive, friendly community where students learn to be a great flute player and thoughtful musician. My goal is to create a space where student feel comfortable to ask questions, try new things, share ideas, and create goals and aim to reach them. Whether you are a middle school wanting to learn the basics and audition for a band at school, a high school student hoping to participate in all-county or all-state band or a youth orchestra, or are an adult who played flute in high school and want to revisit the instrument, there is a place for you in the Matheny flute studio!

What will I learn in lessons?

Students will learn to play the flute well technically, but they will also learn how to be a good interpreter of music. Students will learn skills that will set them apart and make the stand out in performances, auditions, and be able to grow as leaders in their band or orchestra programs. As students progress in skill and their knowledge of the flute, they will learn: proper instrument care, basic music theory (notes, scales, basic chords, strong rhythm-reading skill), how to have productive practice sessions, and how to play effectively in any setting, be it a solo performance, band concert, or chamber ensemble rehearsal. I strongly believe that any student can be successful sight-readers--my private students will learn the "secret formula" to be confident in their ability to tackle ANY new piece.

Topics covered in lessons include, but are not limited to:

  • Basic flute care

  • Confidently reading notes and rhythms

  • Major and minor scales

  • Planning and executing effective practice sessions

  • Playing a wide variety of repertoire and its musical context

  • Producing a clear tone

  • Managing nerves in an audition or performance

  • Confident sightreading

  • Enjoy playing the flute!

What to Expect in a Lesson

Each lesson will be tailored to the student's level, so each person has their own individualized experience. Students can expect the following general flow in each lesson: first, a dynamic warm up (long tones, scales, brief body warm up). Then, they will get the opportunity to play the music they have worked on over the past week for feedback play assigned repertoire (solo, band music, etc) and work on select passages. We will then discuss the week's new topic and go over assignments for the next week; we will play through them, pin pointing the appropriate music theory/interpretation concepts to be applied for the next lesson. Students will get the opportunity to practice sight-reading and put together a personalized practice plan for the next week (we should practice smarter, not "harder"!).
